What Is a Living Brand?

LID Radio | Episode 85

The Book - Living Brands

In LID Radio Episode 85, I explore a fundamental question at the heart of my book Living Brands: what makes a brand truly alive?

The discussion goes beyond conventional approaches to brand building and psychology to explore the biology of human behaviour. Living brands connect with fundamental, evolutionarily preserved human motives—the deeper forces that have guided behaviour throughout our history and continue to influence what we find meaningful, desirable and engaging.

But understanding these motives is only the beginning. The real challenge is to turn them into strategy and positioning. We discuss how organizations can uncover the deeper essence of their brand, decode the fundamental motives driving their category and identify motivational white spaces where the brand can build a distinctive and authentic territory.

This is the thinking behind THE WHEEL OF MOTIVES®: giving emotion a structure so that deeper human motivations can become strategic choices rather than abstract emotional aspirations. The question moves from simply “How should our brand make people feel?” to “Which fundamental human motive can this brand authentically own—and what should that mean for its positioning?”

The methodology then moves from meaning to creation. Once the motivational core of the brand is identified, it can become a compass for communication, concepts, products, services, packaging and experiences—allowing everything the organization says, makes and does to reinforce the same underlying emotional territory.

Using Apple as a case study, I explore how these principles can help explain exceptional brand desirability. The objective is not to imitate what successful brands do on the surface, but to understand the deeper principles behind why they resonate—and use those principles to create something distinctive to one's own brand.

This also explains one of the defining characteristics of a living brand: it does not need to choose between consistency and evolution. Its expressions can continuously change while the deeper motivational core remains recognizable.

A living brand knows what fundamental human motive it exists to satisfy, builds its strategy around it, and continually finds new ways to bring that meaning to life.
