From Material To Meaning
PHASE 2 — REFRAMING THE COMPANY
Initial Problem
After decoding the emotional essence of glass, the next question went deeper:
What business is a global leader in glass packaging really in?
Like many industrial companies, the organization could easily be defined by what it manufactured: glass containers produced at enormous scale, with exceptional technical expertise, quality and efficiency.
But this functional definition underestimated its potential value.
If glass itself carried the motive to TRANSFORM, what did that mean for the company whose expertise was turning this extraordinary material into packaging for some of the world's largest brands?
The challenge became:
Could we uncover the company's own emotional DNA and transform its role from glass manufacturer to strategic brand partner?
Diagnostic Insight
Using THE WHEEL OF MOTIVES®, we decoded the company's deeper emotional DNA.
Once again, the central motive was:
TRANSFORM
But at the corporate level, TRANSFORM acquired an even bigger meaning.
The company literally transforms sand into glass.
But that physical transformation was only the beginning.
Through glass, it could transform:
- Sand into extraordinary glass.
- Matter into identity.
- Products into brands.
- Ordinary moments into events.
This revealed a powerful alignment between the intrinsic meaning of the material and the DNA of the company.
The organization was not simply manufacturing containers.
It was in the business of transformation.
Intervention
BRAND AVIATORS® reframed the company's strategic narrative around TRANSFORM.
The new thinking elevated the organization from a supplier of glass containers to a partner capable of multiplying the impact of its clients' brands.
The strategic idea became:
We transform sand into extraordinary glass, matter into identity, products into brands, ordinary moments into events.
This changed the role packaging could play.
A bottle was no longer simply something manufactured according to specifications.
It could become a physical expression of the emotional essence of the brand and the category it represented.
The company's technical expertise, manufacturing capability and knowledge of glass therefore became reasons to believe in a much larger promise:
Using transformation to create packaging that makes brands more meaningful, distinctive and desirable.
Before
The organization could be understood primarily through the language typical of industrial manufacturing:
Scale. Quality. Production. Technology. Efficiency. Sustainability. Technical expertise.
All were important competitive strengths.
But they described what the company did, rather than the deeper value it could create for its customers.
This risked positioning the organization as a supplier in a world where procurement, specifications and price could dominate the conversation.
The company made extraordinary glass.
But its potential was to make brands extraordinary through glass.
After
TRANSFORM provided a new emotional and strategic foundation for the corporate brand.
The company's role could now extend beyond manufacturing the container to understanding what the client's brand stands for and translating that meaning into glass.
This reframed the relationship with customers.
Instead of asking only
The organization could begin asking
Glass became the medium.
The client's brand DNA became the information.
Transformation connected the two.
The company could therefore help multiply the impact of investments its clients were already making in positioning, product, communication and brand building by ensuring that the physical package embodied the same emotional meaning on the shelf.
The ambition became to create bottles capable of standing out not simply because they were aesthetically different, but because they incarnated the emotional essence of the brands and categories they represented.
This shifted the organization:
From manufacturer → to strategic partner.
From container → to brand expression.
From producing glass → to transforming meaning into matter.
And it created the foundation for the next phase of the collaboration:
If the company's purpose was to transform brand DNA into glass, we now needed a systematic way to actually do it.
The Principle
A company's deepest competitive advantage may not lie in what it manufactures, but in the human meaning of the transformation it performs.
THE WHEEL OF MOTIVES® allowed us to move beyond the functional definition of the business and uncover a deeper corporate DNA.
For this organization, that DNA was TRANSFORM.
It transformed sand into glass—but also had the potential to transform matter into identity, products into brands and ordinary moments into events.
That insight changed the strategic question from:
From
To
The answer would lead directly to Phase 3:
capturing the emotional DNA of individual brands and transforming it into the physical design of the bottle.

FROM METHODOLOGY TO MISSION
The thinking went beyond individual packaging projects. O-I brought the approach into its own market-facing proposition through “Engineering Emotions”—positioning glass packaging as a way for brands to create meaningful emotional connections with consumers.
As O-I explains, emotional connections drive consumer behavior, and packaging can help brands build a distinctive identity, create experiences and stand out on shelf.
What began by decoding the emotional meaning of glass had evolved into a new mission: engineering emotion into packaging.
