A Guide To Winning At The Shelf

How to Communicate Brand Identity and Make Emotional Connections with Consumers Through Packaging

A GUIDE TO WINNING AT THE SHELF

Packaging is often treated as the final stage of branding: protect the product, make it attractive, make it stand out. But its real role goes much deeper.

At the moment of choice, consumers do not experience strategy, positioning and packaging as separate things. They experience one brand. The shape of a bottle, the texture of its surface, its weight, transparency, proportions and visual language can either reinforce what the brand stands for—or unconsciously contradict it.

This is where emotion needs to move beyond something marketers simply discuss, measure or use as an advertising objective. It needs to become part of the brand's strategy and positioning, and from there be translated consistently into the physical and sensory signals consumers actually encounter.

Packaging is one of the most powerful of those signals. It transforms an abstract positioning into something people can see, touch, hold and experience. In this sense, if positioning is the soul of a brand, packaging is its physical embodiment.

Co-authored by O-I and Dr. Constantinos Pantidos, creator of THE WHEEL OF MOTIVES®, this white paper explores how biology, neuroscience and the 12 fundamental human motives can provide a systematic bridge between brand meaning and packaging design. Rather than relying only on aesthetics, trends or subjective preference, the approach begins by identifying the emotional territory a brand should own and then translating that territory into shapes, surfaces, textures and other sensory cues that the brain can intuitively recognize.

Glass provides an especially expressive medium for this translation. Its clarity, weight, form, texture and interaction with light allow it to communicate remarkably different emotional identities—from purity, care and balance to sensuality, transformation, creativity and defiance.

The result is a different way of thinking about winning at the shelf: not designing packaging and then asking what it communicates, but starting with what the brand should mean and allowing that meaning to shape the packaging.
