Global Snacking Brand

From A Complex Positioning To One Emotional Idea

01

Initial Problem

A global leader in snacking had recently acquired a major international bakery brand and needed to clarify its positioning for future growth.

A positioning had already been developed, but it was trying to accomplish too many things simultaneously.

It combined product attributes, sensory benefits, functional needs and emotional promises: indulgence, hunger satisfaction, mood enhancement, spontaneity and excitement in everyday life.

Each element made sense individually.

Together, they did not create a clear emotional idea.

The challenge was to move from a collection of benefits to a distinctive positioning that could give the brand one direction across products, communication and markets.

02

Diagnostic Insight

THE WHEEL OF MOTIVES® was used to look beneath the language of the existing positioning and identify the deeper motivations driving both the brand and the consumer experience.

Two motives emerged:

TRANSFORM — changing the emotional quality of an ordinary moment.

CONNECT — creating warmth, closeness and emotional connection within everyday life.

This revealed something important.

The brand did not need to promise escape from everyday life.

Its opportunity was to make everyday life itself feel better.

The product transforms an ordinary moment through pleasure, while simultaneously reconnecting people with the small experiences that make daily life meaningful.

This intersection became the foundation of a much simpler and more powerful territory:
THE AMAZING EVERYDAY.

03

Intervention

The strategy shifted from trying to communicate multiple benefits to owning one emotionally coherent idea.

Make the everyday amazing.

Instead of asking one product to communicate hunger satisfaction, indulgence, mood enhancement, spontaneity and excitement simultaneously, these different benefits could now become expressions of one higher-order emotional territory.

The brand transforms small, ordinary moments into moments worth enjoying.

A commute. A break. A coffee. A pause between activities. A moment alone or together.

Nothing extraordinary needs to happen.

The transformation happens within the everyday.

THE AMAZING EVERYDAY therefore brought TRANSFORM + CONNECT together into one simple strategic platform capable of guiding communication, innovation and experience.

04

Before → After

Before

A positioning built from multiple functional and emotional benefits.
Rich fillings. Hunger satisfaction. Indulgence. Mood enhancement. Spontaneity. Thrill.
Many promises competing for attention, without a clear hierarchy or emotional centre.
The positioning described many things the brand could deliver, but made it difficult to answer a fundamental question: What should this brand ultimately mean?

After

One motivational core: TRANSFORM + CONNECT.
One human role: Transform ordinary moments into emotionally richer ones.
One clear positioning: THE AMAZING EVERYDAY.
The complexity was replaced by an emotional idea simple enough to remember, broad enough to grow with the brand and distinctive enough to guide decisions.
05

Outcome

The work gave the newly acquired brand a clearer strategic foundation within the portfolio of a global snacking leader.

It created:

  • One coherent emotional territory from multiple disconnected benefits
  • A clear role for the brand beyond product attributes
  • A positioning capable of working across markets and occasions
  • A strategic platform for communication and innovation
  • A simple internal idea teams could understand and activate: THE AMAZING EVERYDAY

Rather than adding another promise to the existing positioning, the breakthrough came from discovering the emotional structure capable of organizing everything underneath it.

06

The Principle

A positioning is not stronger because it says more. It is stronger because everything it says means the same thing emotionally.

Brands often accumulate functional benefits, emotional benefits, consumer needs and creative language in an attempt to maximize relevance.

But more benefits do not necessarily create more meaning.

THE WHEEL OF MOTIVES® identifies the deeper motivational structure behind them and creates a hierarchy:

Many attributes → many benefits → few motives → one emotional idea.

For this brand, TRANSFORM + CONNECT turned a collection of disconnected promises into one powerful territory:

THE AMAZING EVERYDAY.

Because the strongest positioning does not try to make a brand mean everything.

It makes everything the brand does reinforce one meaning.
