From Destination To Brand

Decoding the emotional DNA of an iconic Mediterranean island

01

Initial Problem

The island was already a globally recognized destination, with extraordinary assets spanning history, culture, nature, hospitality and tourism. Yet the value of this global recognition was not being fully captured.

At the same time, major stakeholders—including one of the world's leading tourism groups, regional authorities and the local municipality—were collaborating on an ambitious initiative to transform the island into a model sustainable destination.

But sustainability initiatives, tourism experiences, culture, hospitality, food, mobility and local products risked remaining separate projects without a common strategic foundation.

The challenge was bigger than destination marketing:

How could an entire island be managed as one powerful global brand—creating greater value by aligning everything it offers around a single emotional idea?

02

Diagnostic Insight

We approached the island not simply as a destination, but as a brand embedded in the global collective consciousness.

Using THE WHEEL OF MOTIVES®, we decoded the deeper emotional meaning connecting its history, landscape, culture and visitor experience.

At its core we found the motive to TRANSFORM.

People don't simply come to this island to see a different place. They come to enter a different world—to cross from the ordinary into the extraordinary, to encounter layers of civilizations, dramatic landscapes, light, culture and experiences capable of changing how they feel.

This provided the missing strategic connection.

The island had hundreds of individual assets. TRANSFORM gave them one meaning.

The opportunity therefore shifted from marketing what the island has to managing how the island transforms you.

03

Intervention

We used TRANSFORM as the emotional compass for the destination brand strategy.

The motive was translated into the island's value proposition, personality, emotional and functional benefits, reasons to believe and visitor proposition.

But the strategy was designed to go much further than communication.

TRANSFORM could become the filter for orchestrating the entire visitor experience—before, during and after the journey—and provide direction for hospitality, food and beverage, cultural experiences, local products, mobility, signage and wayfinding, storytelling, visual language, tone of voice, rituals and destination experiences.

It also provided a strategic foundation for connecting sustainability initiatives with the wider destination experience rather than treating sustainability as a separate narrative.

One island. One motive. Thousands of expressions.

04

Before

The island possessed exceptional individual assets and enormous global awareness, but these assets did not operate within one unifying emotional strategy.

Culture told one story. Tourism another. Sustainability another. Food, hospitality, transportation and local products could each create their own narratives.

The destination had tremendous value.

What was missing was the emotional code capable of connecting it.

05

After

With TRANSFORM identified as the island's emotional DNA, the strategy could move beyond destination communication to orchestrate the entire visitor experience.

Every touchpoint could now be designed through the same emotional lens: does this experience make the visitor feel TRANSFORMED—transported from the ordinary into another world?

That meant translating the motive into the smallest as well as the largest details of the destination.

The taxi driver is not simply transporting someone from the airport to a hotel. The first conversation, welcome and stories told on that journey can mark the visitor's transition from everyday life into the world of the island.

Restaurants and local food become more than places to eat. Menus, ingredients, rituals, presentation and storytelling can reveal unexpected aspects of the island and turn gastronomy into part of the transformational journey.

Signage and wayfinding can go beyond directing people from A to B. A distinctive system can encourage discovery, guide visitors towards lesser-known experiences and connect the medieval city, villages, beaches, cultural sites, galleries and landscapes into one unfolding narrative.

Hotels and hospitality can translate TRANSFORM into arrival rituals, service behaviours, spaces and recommendations that make staying on the island feel fundamentally different from staying at another Mediterranean destination.

Local products can become physical pieces of the experience that visitors take home, extending the emotional relationship with the island beyond the trip itself.

Even transportation, public spaces, cultural attractions, sustainability initiatives and digital touchpoints can become expressions of the same emotional promise.

The result is a shift from managing a collection of tourism assets to managing an emotionally coherent destination ecosystem—before the visit, throughout the stay and after visitors return home.

The brand therefore becomes much more than a logo, slogan or advertising campaign.

TRANSFORM becomes a decision-making system for the entire island.

And when thousands of seemingly small interactions consistently reinforce the same emotional meaning, the destination itself becomes the experience—and every visitor can become an ambassador carrying that transformation back into the world.

A place becomes a powerful brand when every part of the experience expresses the same emotional meaning.

People do not experience a destination through a logo or a campaign alone. They experience it through the taxi driver, the hotel, the restaurant, the signage, the food, the streets, the cultural sites, the service and the stories they take home.

THE WHEEL OF MOTIVES® provides the emotional code that can connect all these touchpoints.

For this island, that code was TRANSFORM.

Once the motive was identified, it could become the common strategic filter for every stakeholder and every interaction—turning a fragmented collection of tourism assets into one coherent emotional journey.

The strongest destination brands do not simply give people more things to see. They make people feel they have entered a different world.
