Creating A Brand From An Emotional White Space
From an unoccupied motive to a new cheese brand
Initial Problem
In a mature cheese category filled with established brands, product traditions and familiar positioning territories, the challenge was not to improve an existing brand.
There was no brand yet.
The task was to create one from the ground up.
Rather than beginning with a name, visual identity or conventional product concept, BRAND AVIATORS® started with a more fundamental question:
Is there an important emotional need in the category that existing brands are not satisfying?
Diagnostic Insight
Using THE WHEEL OF MOTIVES®, we mapped the emotional landscape of the category and identified an emotional white space.
The opportunity was DESIRE.
While competitors occupied other familiar category territories, there was room for a cheese brand built more explicitly around sensual pleasure, temptation and intense enjoyment.
This changed the innovation process.
Instead of creating another product and then searching for a positioning that could differentiate it, we had first identified an emotional territory worth creating a brand for.
The white space came before the brand.
Intervention
BRAND AVIATORS® used DESIRE as the foundation for creating the new brand.
The motive guided the positioning, emotional promise, concept and language.
It also inspired the name:
BLISS POINT
The name captured the idea of reaching that moment of maximum sensory pleasure—the point at which indulgence becomes an experience in itself.
Rather than describing cheese through provenance, functionality or conventional category language, the brand could build its world around desire and sensory pleasure.
The process therefore moved systematically from:
Category mapping → Emotional white space → DESIRE → Brand concept → Positioning → Name → Experience.
The brand was not created and subsequently given an emotion.
It was born from an emotion.
Before → After

The Principle
The most valuable white spaces are not always product gaps. They can be emotional gaps.
Categories are often mapped through price, format, ingredients, demographics or consumption occasions.
THE WHEEL OF MOTIVES® adds another layer:
Which fundamental human motivations are already occupied—and which remain available?
An unoccupied motivational territory can become the starting point for innovation, positioning, product design and even the creation of an entirely new brand.
In this case, the journey began with DESIRE and ended with BLISS POINT.
Don't create a product and search for a reason to exist. Find the emotional reason to exist—and build the brand around it.
