CRACKING THE CODE OF UNSPOKEN NEEDS
IIEX Asia Pacific 2025, Bangkok
Emotions drive choice, yet many of the deeper forces behind that choice cannot be consciously articulated by consumers. Businesses therefore face a fundamental challenge: how do you uncover and operationalize needs that people themselves may not be able to explain—particularly when an entire category has become trapped in the same established ideas?
Traditional people-involved research is powerful at capturing what consumers can consciously articulate. But conventional approaches can also rationalize behavior through stated needs, attitudes and preferences, while deeper emotional forces remain beneath conscious awareness. Neuroimaging can reveal responses, but is often used to validate ideas after they have been created rather than generate the strategic thinking that creates them in the first place.
At IIEX Asia Pacific 2025 in Bangkok, Dr. Constantinos Pantidos, Founder of BRAND AVIATORS® and creator of THE WHEEL OF MOTIVES®, presented a complementary approach: using neurobiology, affective science and AI to give these deeper emotional forces structure, uncover unspoken human needs and turn them into actionable brand strategy.
THE WHEEL OF MOTIVES® provides the framework for mapping the fundamental human motives behind choice. By understanding not only the motive itself, but also the biological, semantic and sensory cues capable of expressing and activating it, brands can move beyond interpreting what consumers say toward designing around deeper human truths.
The approach was demonstrated through the Equal case study. In a sweetener category where brands had been competing around essentially the same successful promise for years—and where finding a credible new direction had become increasingly difficult—the methodology uncovered a different opportunity: repositioning Equal around the deeper human motive to CONNECT.
The case illustrates how the methodology can move upstream in strategy. Instead of generating ideas first and asking consumers which they prefer, the deeper motivational landscape can reveal territories that are not yet adequately occupied and become the starting point for what the brand should create.
It captures a principle at the heart of the BRAND AVIATORS® approach: biology gives emotion structure, THE WHEEL OF MOTIVES® maps the deeper forces behind choice, and AI can expand our ability to identify patterns, uncover opportunities and translate that understanding into strategy and execution.
The broader principle for brand strategy is simple:
When consumers cannot articulate the next opportunity, don't just ask harder. Go deeper.
By combining the scale and pattern-recognition capabilities of AI with the explanatory power of neurobiology, unspoken human needs can become new spaces for brands to own.
